This site includes three railways. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was the first, and is still the most outstanding, example of a hill passenger railway. Opened in 1881, its design applies bold and ingenious engineering solutions to the problem of establishing an effective rail link across a mountainous terrain of great beauty.

There are three world heritage railway in the list. The three are- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka Shimla Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway.


Darjeeling Himalayan is a 2ft narrow gauge railway of 88km between Darjeeling and Siliguri. In 1999 UNESCO declared this as world heritage site.


Kalka Shimla Railway is a 2ft 6in narrow gauge railway of 59.44mile located in Himachal Pradesh between Shimla and Kalka. This railway joined as world heritage site of UNESCO in 2008.


Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a 29mile single line railway located in Tamil Nadu between the hill station Udagamandalam and Mettupalayam town. In 2005 this site joined world heritage railway list with Darjeeling.
