According to the law of conservation, energy can neither be created nor be destroyed. It can only be transferred from one form to another. Thus when work is done, the entropy of the universe will get increased followed by getting transferred. In Physics, work is defined as:

W = Fd cosθ,

Where θ = angle between force and displacement.

The unit of energy is Joule (J).

  Hence, work can neither be positive nor negative.

"When work is being done, energy is being transferred from one point to another. The "law of conservation" of energy "states" that "energy" can be changed from one form to the another form but neither be destroyed nor created.

Work is defined as the change in the kinetic energy of an object which results in work done. Therefore, whenever work is done, energy is used to transfer from its form and do the given work with some energy loss."
