Which is better, a monarchy or a republic?

The problem with the question is that both monarchy and republic are extremely broad categories.
The UK and the Russian Empire were both monarchies. So is Saudi Arabia. So is Canada. So is New Zealand. So is Spain, the Netherlands, Jordan, the UAE…etc. They have little in common besides technically being monarchies. North Korea is arguably a hereditary Communist monarchy.
Similarly, the USA, modern Russia, China, Zimbabwe, and many others are republics. Iran is a republic, albeit an Islamic theocratic one. They too have little in common with each other.
Then you have changes that occur in time. Just over 100 years ago, the British Empire was the largest in history and arguably hugely successful. Barely 50 years later, it unraveled and Britain was on its knees. Who knows what the future will bring? Will the USA continue to be the dominant power? Or will it too unravel?
So there is no simple answer. Some monarchies and republics have been successful, others not so much. But the successful ones have largely had a few things in common:
Respect for the rule of law
Multiethnic
Relatively strong meritocracy (compared to contemporary cultures)
Low concentration of wealth
Strong military traditions without letting the military run the country
Some of these are less important than others, and some managed to be successful without all of them. But broadly speaking, these are much more important than the form of government itself.
So if a country has a monarchy in place and it works for them, as far as I am concerned, it can perfectly well stay in place. Same goes for republics. Whatever works and keeps the people satisfied.
