The first project of hydropower projects in Odisha state is the Machkund Project. The second stage of the project is the Balimela Power project. Both the projects are on the Machkund-Sileru river. The estimate of the Balimela power project was revised in the year 1975 for 52.14 Crore rupees.

While the Balimela Dam is a joint project of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh Governments with the inflow into Balimela Reservoir being shared between the two States on a 50:50 basis, the Balimela Power project is entirely of Odisha state.
