When the prophase - 1 starts the chromosome start to duplicate in number, during this phase we get to see that the chromosomes start to coil thus becoming thicker and shorter.

This allows them to be visible under the microscope.

During this phase, the pair of the chromosomes become visible and it consists of two sister chromatids.
