The tectonic plates are made up of Earth's crust and the upper part of the mantlelayer underneath. Together the crust and upper mantleare called the lithosphere and they extend about 80 km deep. The lithosphere is broken into giant plates that fit around the globe like puzzle pieces

The crust of planet Earth is made up of tectonic plates.

  • This layer of the planet is known as the crust and makes up the tectonic plates that have around 100 km of thickness.
  • These plates collided to form the mountains and continue to float on the hot and thick mantle.
  • There are seven such plates that form all the continents.
  • Usually, when these plates collide, an earthquake occurs which belongs to some of the most disastrous calamities of nature.
