The top layer of the soil is rich in humus. This is because all the organic matter decompose on the topmost layer for which the humus is most at the top rather than any other layer.
The quantity and quality of the humus decreases as we go further into the soil and at one point, there will be no humus at all. That is the rock layer or also known as lower most layer of the soil table.
