Explanation:

Diwani rights were granted to the East India Company for collecting revenues and administering civil cases. It was granted in the year 1765.

The Mughal emperor Shah Alam II, after the defeat of Mir Jafar, and Shuja-ud-daula, (ruler of Bengal) granted the rights of Bengal and Bihar provinces to the company. Robert Clive received it and the company was appointed as the diwan.

This was beneficial for the company as they could use the vast resources and had legal rights over these provinces. The revenue collected from these provinces was used by the company for its benefits.

Earlier, for buying goods from India, they had to pay in gold and silver which was imported from Britain. This overflow of silver and gold stopped after they got the Diwani rights.
