The working of heating elements is based on heating effect of electric current. When a current is passed through a resistance, it produces the heat.

The required properties in material used for heating elements-

High melting point.

High tensile strength.

High resistivity.

Low temperature coefficient of resistance.

High ductility to draw the metal or alloy in the form of wire.

Mostly, Nichrome wire is used as a heating element because it is very stable, even at high temperatures. Unlike other metals, it does not melt even when large amounts of heat is passed.
