Silicon is the element used in making microchips.

Why?

It is because of the requirement of Computer chips, of some insulator for it's complex and detailed circuitry. And silicon being the insulator when combined with oxygen (Silicon Oxide) serves the purpose.

I hope, It's clear? :)

Vanessa18: I thought silicon is a non metal..
Anonymous: Silicon is a metalloid. Mostly showing properties of non metals. However, It is what's used mainly in the making of microchips. And the reason is mentioned. :)
