David Burghley was born on 9th February 1905. He was an English athlete and a politician belonging to the Conservative Party. He took part in the 1928 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal in the race of 400 meters hurdles.
He went on to become the Governor of Bermuda after he resigned his Commons seat in 1943 . He remained at the post until 1945.
During his last year at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1927 he surprised his class mates by running unbelievably fast around the Great Court at Trinity College. His sprint was depicted in of the scene of the film Chariots of Fire in which Harold Abrahams achieved the same .
In the film Chariots of Fire the character of Lord Andrew Lindsay was based on Burghley.
