The narrative used in Wakefield is open to interpretation and follows a free to shape your own idea type idealogy.
It means that the protagonist Wakefield just to break out of his mundane life leaves his life behind and start a new life with an alias.
He ultimately regrets it but can't find the courage to go back home to his wife and children even after having an encounter after 10 years with his wife.
Twenty years after finally leaving he returns back home.
