In Europe the first proper university was established in 1088 in Bologna. The University of Bologna was set up as a guild or group of students who learned canon and civil law.

The University of Paris was set up between 1150 and 1170. Theology was taught there.

So the early universities in Europe fulfilled the need for learning canon and civil law and theology.
