a) is wrong bcuz 9 is not considered

b) is wrong bcuz 6 cannot be used as to full up the shells they need 8 from the second shell as the first one requires 2

Explanation :

in orbital structure of sodium

K shell can accommodate only 2 electrons

L shell can accommodate only 8 electrons

M shell can accommodate only 1 electron

Therefore, valency of sodium will be 1

and also it will have a positive charge as sodium will loose one electron while reaction with a non metal .
