The Lot No. 92 at Bonhams auction house gives an impression less alluring—simply a blob of mold encased in glass and plastic. But this mold is famous and has made history. It’s a rare part of the original culture of Penicillium chrysogenum, the fungi that led to bacteriologist Alexander Fleming’s 1928 discovery of the life-saver antibiotic penicillin.
Fleming preserved the specimen himself in his lab and it was expected to sell at auction for at least £4,000 (about $5,000).
