Given

A train of mass 200 kg moving with a velocity of 90 km/hr

A bike of mass 75 kg moving with a velocity 60 km/hr

To Find

Which has more momentum

Solution

Momentum : It is defined as product of mass and velocity

SI unit : kg.m/s

Case - 1 :

Mass of train , m = 200 kg

Velocity , v = 90 km/h = 25 m/s

Apply formula ,

⇒ P = mv

⇒ P = (200)(25)

P = 5000 kg.m/s

Momentum of the train = 5000 kg.m/s

Case - 2 :

Mass of bike , m = 75 kg

Velocity , v = 60 km/h = 16.66 m/s

⇒ P = mv

⇒ P = (75)(16.66)

P = 1250 kg.m/s

Momentum of the bike = 1250 kg.m/s

As the momentum of the train is greater than the momentum of the bike , so , Train has more momentum

Which of the following has more momentum ?

\star\:\:\:\bf\large\underline\green{Solution:–:–}

\boxed{\bf{\red{Formula\:of\:momentum:-P=mv}}}

1st case :-

☛︎ Mass of the train, m = 200 kg

☛︎ Velocity of the train, v = 90 km/hr = 25 m/s

.°. Momentum of the train ,

➝P= mv

➝P = 200 × 25 kg.m/s

➝P = 5000 kg.m/s

\boxed{\bf{\blue{Momentum\:of\:the\:train=5000\:kg.m/s}}}

2nd case :-

☛︎ Mass of the bike, m = 75 kg

☛︎ Velocity of the bike, v = 60 km/hr = 16.66 m/s

.°. Momentum of the bike,

➝P = mv

➝P = 75 × 16.66 kg.m/s

➝P = 1250 kg.m/s

\boxed{\bf{\blue{Momentum\:of\:the\:bike=1250\:kg.m/s}}}

Hence, momentum of the bike is more than the momentum of the train.
