The Hindu mythology is based on trimuriti i.e Lord Brahma-the creator, Vishnu-the preserver and Shiva- the destroyer. So Shiva is being called the destroyer. There are are evidences which show there was a proto-type Shiva during the Indus Valley Civilization. In Vedic period Rudra was the God of thunder and destruction and Hindus mostly identify him with Shiva.
