It is specific in nature is not true about innate immunity.(option - c)
- Innate immunity as the name suggests is "inborn" i.e. present from birth.
- It consists of various barriers and innate immune cells which prevent various pathogens and foreign organisms from entering our body.
- The barriers are common for all foreign particles and infection-causing organisms.
- It cannot recognize or differentiate between different kinds of pathogens, Hence it is non-specific.
- Various kinds of barriers are:-
- Physical barriers- skin(1st line of Defence), mucus
- Physiological barriers-tears, saliva, pH
- Cytokine barriers-Interferons- are released by virus-infected cells to prevent their neighboring normal cells from viral attack.
- Cellular Barriers-Macrophages, monocytes, WBCs, Natural killer cells.
- It is activated always in the same way, does not depend on prior contact with antigens, and does not have memory, as the acquired immune system has.
