while √6 + √9 is an irrational number

√4 + √9 =2+3=5
a rational number

√6 + √9=√6+3 or 3+√6

Given:

(i) √6 + √9

(ii) √4 + √9

To  find:

which of the above is rational

Solution:

(i) √6 + √9

= √6 + √(3²)

= √6 + 3

as √6 is an irrational number (√6 cannot be expressed in form of p/q), so, √6 + 3 also becomes an irrational number

(ii) √4 + √9

= √(2²) + √(3²)

= 2 + 3

= 5

as 5 is a rational number (5 can be expressed in form of p/q = 5/1), so, √4 + √9 also becomes a rational number.

Therefore (ii) √4 + √9 is a rational number.
