Glass pipettes can be sterilized by dry heat sterilization.
- Dry heat sterilization is a method of sterilization used to kill microorganisms including bacteria and viruses by using air at high temperature that is free from water or has very little.
- The apparatus employed for this mechanism is called a Hot Air Oven. It requires a higher temperature and time than an autoclave. Standard temperatures are- 160⁰c for 2 hours, 170⁰c for 1 hour, 190⁰c for 20 minutes and so on.
- Glassware, metals, cellulose and powders are usually sterilized by this method.
- Plastics, rubber and most culture media are sterilized by moist heat sterilization in the presence of water using an Autoclave.
