The Mathematical expression that express the given verbal statement is √x = (x + 2) - 5

Given:

The verbal statement “The square root of a number, x, is 5 less than

the sum of the number and 2”

To find:

Which of the following properly expresses the verbal statement

Solution:

Given verbal statement is “The square root of a number 'x' is 5 less than the sum of the number and 2”

Here square root of the number, x = √x

Sum of the number and 2 = (x + 2)

According to the Verbal statement,

The square root of the number 'x', √x is five less (-5) than the sum of the number and 2 i.e (x + 2)

=>  √x = (x + 2) - 5

Therefore,

The Mathematical expression that express the given verbal statement is √x = (x + 2) - 5
