There are two reasons for that,
1) magnesium's outer shell electron is in the s subshell of the third shell i.e. 3s subshell. And because it has 2 electrons in its outermost shell the s subshell fills completely hence making the compound more stable.
2) Despite the reason above, I did not consider calcium as the answer because even if it also has its outer shell electron in the same complete subshell, it has more electrons in the inner shells compared to magnesium. This causes something known as a spin pair repulsion hence making it less stable.
