Well, it depends. The distance, massiveness, brightness, variability all are taken into account. For example, the brightest star, Sirius, is very close to us. But there are stars so close to us which cannot be seen by naked eyes.

Stars with least energy are most likely to be dim.

The coldness of stars too don't determine the brightness of the star. The coldness or hotness of a star only determines the colour of it.

Most massive stars are the most likely to be brightest but that's not the case always.

The farther the star, the lesser the brightness of it. But some stars could be so bright that even though they are far away, we could see them bright.

So, on a shorter note, the most massive star is the star which is more likely to appear brightest, even though that is not the case always
