The earth is heated by terrestrial radiation. Terrestrial radiation is the longwave electromagnetic radiation that is emitted from the earths surface and its atmosphere.

The solar radiation which is received in form of short wave radiation does not directly heat the atmosphere. Land absorbs this energy and then emits it back into the atmosphere
