The cassettes use a thin film coated with ferric oxide. The magnetic moments (tiny magnets) of the film align in a special manner when we record data on the cassette. When we place the cassette near to a magnet, the alignment of the magnetic moments on the cassette will change according to the magnetic field produced by the magnet. This causes the data loss from the cassette.
The mobile phones make use of electromagnetic signals for communication. When magnets are placed near the mobile phone, it will reduce the signal reception capability of the mobile.
Magnets will not harm the CDs or DVDs as they use optical recording.
The magnetic field produced by the magnet will affect the CRT based TV and computer monitors. The monitors and TVs use a metal plate at the front of the picture tube, to focus electron beams from the electron gun. This plate is known as shadow mask. When this plate got magnetized from external magnetic fields, it produces discolouration at that point.
The introduction of magnets near the radio receivers will increase the noise of the radio.
