Solids have the least inter-molecular spaces among all the states of matter. The reason is that the constituent particles of the solids are closely and tightly packed with each other. That's why they are not easily compressible and have high density. It is infact the inter molecular attraction which decides the composition of matter. The stronger inter-molecular attraction make substance a solid.
Temperature and pressure are also related to inter particle spaces of matter. As solids have least inter-molecular spaces, so more pressure is applied to change its shape. Similarly, the stronger the inter-molecular forces, the greater the energy required to break the bonds between the molecules and hence temperature will be high.
