The air we inhaled which has more oxygen goes to the lungs and air exchange takes place in the alveoli. Here the oxygen gets exchanged with carbon dioxide which came from all over the  body. This deoxygenated blood is taken back to the lungs and the carbon dioxide is separated and exhaled out.
