question : Which of the following values cannot be a probability of an event?

(a) -0.0001 (b) 0.5 (c) 1.001 (d) 1 (e) 20% (f) 0.253 (g) (1 - √5)/2 (h) (√3 + 1)/4

Solution : the probability of an event is not greater than 1 and not less than 0.

i.e., 0 ≤ P(E) ≤ 1 .....(1)

now check which of the following values satisfy condition (1).

(a) not satisfied , so it cannot be a probability of an event.

(b) satisfied, it is a probability of an event.

c) not satisfied, it cannot be a probability of an event.

(d) satisfied, it is a probability of an event.

(e) 20% = 1/5 satisfied, it is a probability of an event.

(f) satisfied, it is a probability of an event.

(g) (1 - √5)/2 < 0 , not satisfied so it cannot be a probability of an event.

(h) (√3 + 1)/4 < 1 , satisfied so it is a probability of an event.
