Question:

What are the different types of welding method used for welding job in workshop?

Answer:

There are four main types of welding:

  1. MIG – Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
  2. TIG – Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW),
  3. Stick – Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  4. Flux-cored – Flux-cored Arc Welding (FCAW).

Explanation:

  • MIG welding is used in the automotive industry for repairing vehicle emissions and for building homes and buildings. This is one of the most generally welds used. Arc welding utilizes a continuous wire which is called an electrode. It also uses a shielding gas that passes through the welding gun and protects it from contamination.
  • TIG welding also he uses an electric arc as well as MIG.  TIG welding uses tungsten electrodes. Tungsten is one of the hardest metallic materials. Will not melt or burn. Welding can be done by a process called smelting, with or without filler metal. TIG also uses an external gas supply such as inert gases primarily argon and helium.
  • The main advantage of stick welding is its portability. Stick welding is generally used in construction, maintenance purposes and also subsea pipelines, and industrial production.
  • Cored wire arc welding is similar to he MIG welding in that it uses both  continuous wire and a power source. They combine  continuous electrodes and base metals. The electrode is a hollow tube filled with flux that is fed  into the weld pool through the welding gun. Flux shield protects from the elements when welding outdoors. This type of welding is used in the welding of thicker metals and  in the machining industry.
