Coromandel Coast's winter rain is due to Southwest monsoon or Retreating monsoon.

  • During winter ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone) gets shifted to the south i.e., below the equator because sun rays fall directly in the southern hemisphere.
  • Due to the large ocean in the south and large land mass in the north, a temperature difference is created between land and ocean, as the ocean heats up slowly and cools slowly but lands heat up fastly and cool down fastly.
  • Northern hemisphere has a large landmass whereas the southern hemisphere has a large ocean.
  • Due to less temperature on land (northern) than ocean (southern) low pressure develops in the southern hemisphere and air from the North moves to low pressure.
  • This is called a northwest monsoon. This air containing moisture in it blocked by eastern ghats leads to rain.
