Biological membranes are made of three main components. They are lipids, proteins and sugars. Lipids form the bilayer.

The lipid bilayer or phospholipid bilayer is a thin membrane which is made of two layers of lipid molecules. It is a universal component of all cell membranes. It is known as a lipid bilayer because it is composed of two layers of fatty acids organized in two sheets. The lipid bilayer is about five to ten nanometers thick.

Lipid components form the bilayer of all biological membranes. This layer is made up of two fatty acids which are organized well in two sheets. It acts as a barrier. Its thickness is about five to ten nanometers.

Cell membranes also contain protein and carbohydrates. Two types of proteins are present in a lipid bilayer.  Integral and peripheral membrane proteins.
