So, Flood is the most common type of natural disaster and it frequently hit the the coastal and river basin areas of Ganga-Brahmaputra regions. Out of the total geographical area of 329 million hectares (mha), more than 40 mha is flood prone. Over 1,600 people die every year due to floods, affecting nearly 32 million people. The main cause of flood is the great extent of rainfall received per year in some areas which makes it a flood prone areas, like the peninsular region such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu where it received the highest amount of rainfall and the regions near the Kosi river in Bihar.
