Salts of calcium and magnesium are responsible for the hardness of water.
- Hard water contains calcium and magnesium mainly bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates. Iron ore may be present; embedded in oxid to the ferric form, it appears as a reddish-brown color on washed fabrics and on representative surfaces.
- The water solubility caused by calcium bicarbonate is known to be temporary because boiling converts bicarbonate into insoluble carbonate; hardness from some salt is said to be permanent. Calcium and magnesium ions in solid water react with high-fat sold acids to form an insoluble gelatinous curd, thus causing deterioration of the soap. This undesirable reaction does not occur with modern cleaners.
