The answer to which organ helps us to sense whether something is hot or cold, rough or smooth, etc. is the skin of our body.
The skin helps us to differentiate between the things which are cold or hot or between the roughness or smoothness of different things also.
Basically, there are numerous sensory nerve ending present on the skin which picks up sense of hotness, coldness and so on and forwards it to the reflex arc of the brain which gets processed in the brain and the appropriate responses gets forwarded back to the skin nerve endings.
This action is known as the reflex action.
