The Election Commission provides certain criteria regarding recognition of national and state political parties. In case a political party to be recognized as a state party, it should meet any of the following requirements:-

1) Achieve at least 6% of the valid vote & win at least 2 seats in a State Assembly Election

2) Achieve at least 6% of the valid vote & win at least 1 seats in a Lok Sabha Election

3) In a State Assembly Election, the party should win at least 3% of the total seats.

Today, there are total of 47 recognized state parties approved by the Election Commission of India.
