It is in the roots infact root nodules of leguminous plants like lentil, pea , soyabean etc.
They contain symbiotic bacteria called rhizobia within nodules in their root systems, producing nitrogen compounds that help the plant to grow and compete with otherplants. When the plant dies, the fixed nitrogen is released, making it available to otherplants; this helps to fertilize the soil.
