The part which turns blue black shows the presence of starch while the part which does not have starch shows brown colouration.
In the experiment to prove that a plant contains starch or not,
First, destarch the plant by keeping in a dark room for 24 - 48 hours.
Then , Take a leaf(don't pluck it ,let it be attached) and cover it with a black paper in which a design is cut (like that of a circle , star etc.) and then leave the plant in sun.
After a few hrs. test the leaf which was covered by the paper for starch. And pour iodine soln. on it.
the part which was covered by the paper shows brown colouration due to absence of starch while the part which was uncovered shows blue black colouration.

Because starch is produced in the uncovered area of leaf which turns blue black in the presence of iodine solution.
