Mesophyll cells are the main centres for photosynthesis. When sunlight falls on the leaf, light energy is trapped by the chlorophyll on the upper layers of the Mesophyll esp the palisade cells. This energy is used in processing raw materials mainly water and co2 into food.

Carbon dioxide enters the leaf from the atmosphere through the stroma

by diffusion down a concentrated gradient. Water along with co2 in mesophyll cells go under the following reaction to process food.

6 CO2 + 12 H2O ------->C6H12O6 + 6H2O +6 O2
