ELECTRONEGATIVITY DECREASES DOWN THE GROUP.

The alkali metal group (GROUP 1) involve the following elements:

  • Lithium
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Rubidium
  • Cesium
  • Francium

Now, as we go down from top to bottom in the group 1 of the modern periodic table , there is increase in atomic radii. So, the valence electeon tends to be located far away from the nuclei; this results in lesser tendency of nuclei of the elements to pull electrons towards itself.

Hence , the electronegativity of the elements decrease as we go down from Lithium to Francium.
