There are five types of melanin commonly found in nature: eumelanin, pheomelanin, neuromelanin, pyomelanin, and allomelanin. Of the five, eumelanin is the most abundant and is a brown to black pigment. The eumelanin polymer is composed 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) units.
