Cells of meristematic tissues are responsible for growth in roots and stems. Cells of the meristematic tissues are responsible for growth in roots and stems plants. The merstematic tissues are lateral and apical in apical. On the basis of position of the merstematic tissues they are classified into broad groups into the apical and lateral meristem.
The apical meristems are situated at the apex of roots and shoot. They are responsible of growth in length in dicots, monocots both.It is known as primary growth for legnth.
The lateral meritrems are cambium and cork cambium. The lateral meristems are responsible for growth in thickness. It is called as secondary growth for thickness. Thank You.

There are three meristemetic tissue: Apical meristem, intercalary meristem and cambium or lateral meristem. First of all breadth and girth is the same thing. The tissue which is responsible for the increament of girth of the stem and root is cambium or lateral meristem.
