Mohummad Tughlaq wanted to safeguard his capital from the constant Mongol invasions, so he thought he would change his capital to Daulatabad when he could easily access the fertile lands of Deccan and ensure the safety of the ports of Gujarat and the Coromandel coast. He asked the entire population of Delhi to shift to Daulatabad instead of only changing his court. Many people died in the journey and the king had lost most of his population. After changing the capital he got news of invasions in Bengal and the northwester frontier. Tughlaq then realised that he couldn’t keep his empire safe from the Mongol invasions in North India and hence he ordered al the people to shift back to Delhi. This way thousands of people died on their way back.
