When phosphorous reacts with NaOH, it produce phosphine and Sodium hypophosphite.

4P + 3NaOH + 3H_{2}O?PH_{3} + 3NaH_{2}PO_{2}.

Phosphine gas is produced, when white phosphorous is warmed with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. It is a colourless, odorless gas.

Exposure to little amount of this gas leads to loose bowels, dizziness, cough, chest tightness, cerebral pain and on greater exposure leads to coma, convulsions, damage to the liver and kidney.
