Lord Dalhousie arrived in India as the Governor-General in 1848. He implemented his policy of annexation as the 'Doctrine of Lapse'. Under this Doctrine, when the ruler of a protected state died without having a natural heir, his state was not supposed to be transferred to the adopted heir.
