Prussia dominated the nation building process in Germany.
After 1860s, the leadership of Otto von Bismarck in politics and diplomacy, the reorganization of the army and its training techniques by Albrecht von Roon and the redesign of the operational and strategic principles by Helmuth von Moltke made Prussia one of the most powerful states in the European affairs.
Officially the unification of Germany into a politically and administratively integrated nation state took place in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in France on 18 January 1871. After France was defeated in the Franco-Prussian War, the princes of the German states except Austria gathered there to proclaim Wilhelm I of Prussia as the German Emperor.
