The mass of atom is not accounted on electron and proton .Relative mass of proton is 1u and relative mass of electron is 1/1824u.so the mass of electron is negligible. For example a carbon atom contain 6e and 6p.hence the atomic mass of carbon atom should be 6u because mass of 6e is negligible. but this is wrong.the atomic mass of carbon is 12u then how to maintain this 6u mass.this problem was solved by the discovery of neutron.relative mass of neutron is 1u .Hence atomic mass of carbon is 6n + 6p become 12 and atomic mass of carbon is 12u..
