This question was asked in my boards today.

=> When Cao dissolved in water then the following reaction takes place.

=> Cao + H2O - - - - > Ca ( OH) 2


=> When it is dissolved in water it forms Calcium Hydroxide.

=> We can test the nature of product by using litmus paper.

=> When the product is applied on litmus paper it turns from red to blue indicating that the product is basic in nature.

Hence, the product is base.
