A chemical change can be loosely described as a transformation that modifies the nature of a compound or element.

But this is (purposely) rather vague and ambiguous. What in Earth a change in nature is after all?

I think that a suitable tentative definition of chemical change is: a change in conectivity of atoms in one or more molecules.

In the first case, it will be some kind of isomerization - an internal shift! In the second case, the normal kind of chemical reactions taken by elements and substances

The breaking and / or formation of covalent bonds is considered as the essential characteristic for the occurrence of a chemical reaction. This encompasses ionic substances also. For example, if hydrocloric acid (HCl), a molecular (covalent) substance, reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), an ionic substance, the resulting products are water (another covalent substance) and sodium chloride - the common salt - a ionic substance.

This kind of change occurs due to the drive force given by energy differences, namely Gibbs free energy changes.

The way that the chemical reactions undergoes is what is called reaction mechanism and consists of a sequence of small breaking and reseting of chemical bonds, all driven by local energy changes.
