The substances having free charge carriers are called the conductors. The examples of conductors are metallic substances e.g. copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron, mercury etc.
Dielectrics are substances which do not contain free charge carriers. The examples of dielectrics are porcelain (ceramic), mica, glass, plastics, and the oxides of various metals. Dry air is an excellent dielectric, and is used in variable capacitors and some types of transmission lines. Distilled water is a fair dielectric.
