Magnets are attracted or repelled by other magnets. Earth is a big magnet. So the North Pole of Earth (Magnetic South Pole) attracts the South pole of the magnetic needle used in a compass. Also the South pole of Earth attracts the North Pole of the needle.
The needle which is magnetized and is free to rotate horizontally on top of a horizontal plane is used to show North South directions.
Property: To align itself along the North South of Earth.
